Ballaarat Mechanics' Institute (BMI), sitting proudly under the watchful eye of Minerva, has welcomed a diverse group of people through its doors, from the founding fathers, to miners and others seeking knowledge through education.

The BMI is an extremely versatile venue that it can host events from sit-down dinners and wedding receptions to movie screenings and art exhibitions. The BMI produces live music events, comedy gigs, and theatre!

The BMI also has a members' library on the ground floor of the building that houses a very large heritage collection of books and newspapers, as well as the latest novels that are available to borrow.

Description

The Museum was formed to preserve the tramway experience that existed on the streets of Ballarat from 1887 to 1971. Trams are operated along a public road on an original section of the track, using authentic methods of operation such as conductors, paper tickets, uniforms, tramstops, and even original style paperwork. Our tram depot, at the south end of the Ballarat Botanical Gardens, houses the tramcar collection, a museum display with photographs, videos, tramway memorabilia, trammie stories,

Activities

Trams operated in Wendouree Parade on weekends, school holidays and Public Holidays between 12noon and 5pm. Our Trams are maintained at the depot by the Museum's volunteers. New volunteers are always welcomed.

Depot is normally attended every day, between 4pm and 7pm.

Trams are available for hire and guided tours are available at the same time. Self guided tours are also available.

The Eureka Centre Ballarat explores the cultural impact of the gold rush and tells the stories of the men and women who risked their lives in the fight for miner’s rights. The Eureka Centre is located as the historic site of the 1854 Eureka Stockade and is home to one of Australia’s most iconic cultural objects – The Eureka Flat (The Flag of the Southern Cross).

Activities

Eureka Centre features a permanent exhibition that explores life on the gold fields and the fight for miners’ rights. The exhibition introduces the people and events that resulted in the 1854 Eureka Stockade uprising.
The Centre offers an education program led by professional educators. The cost is $9.50 (inc GST) per student. Teachers are free of charge. For bookings contact (03) 5333 0308 or EurekaEducation@ballarat.vic.gov.au. Ask about discount for local schools.

The Ballarat Health Services Library provides a fully integrated, high quality, multi-site clinical information service to all staff.

It provides access to health information to support patient care, aid medical and surgical diagnosis and treatment, encourage an awareness of current medical literature and to support continuing education and research.

Her Majesty's is one of Australia's most historic theatres. The theatre has served the people of Ballarat since its foundation in 1874 and has been in continuous use as a live theatre throughout its history. Tickets to performances can be booked through MajesTix.

Description

The large auditorium seats 857 and the expansive stage area has the capacity to handle performances ranging from opera, pipe bands, and live theatre to orchestral and ensemble presentations. Many dance and theatre schools use the facility for their gala performances whilst primary schools hold their graduation ceremonies here.
